Understanding Your Skin Type

Knowing your skin type is the first step toward creating a skincare routine that works for you. Everyone’s skin has different needs, and factors such as age, weather, hormones, lifestyle, diet, and skincare products can affect how your skin behaves.

There are five commonly recognized skin types:

Normal Skin

Normal skin has a good balance of oil and moisture.

Characteristics:

1. Balanced oil production

2.  Generally smooth and comfortable

3.  Small or less noticeable pores

4.  Usually not excessively dry or oily

5.  Relatively even-looking texture

Skincare tips:

1.  Use a gentle cleanser.

2.  Keep skin moisturised.

3.  Use sunscreen during the day.

4.  Avoid using too many products at once.

Oily Skin

Oily skin produces more sebum than needed, which can make the skin appear shiny.

Characteristics:

1. Noticeable shine, especially in the T-zone

2. Larger or more visible pores

3. May be prone to clogged pores and breakouts

4. Makeup may become oily or wear off faster

Skincare tips:

1. Choose a gentle, non-comedogenic cleanser.

2. Use a lightweight moisturiser.

3. Avoid aggressively scrubbing the skin.

4. Use sunscreen suitable for oily skin.

Dry Skin

Dry skin occurs when the skin does not retain enough moisture or produces less natural oil. It can feel tight, rough, or uncomfortable, particularly after cleansing.

Common characteristics:

1. Tight or dry feeling

2. Rough or flaky patches

3. Dull appearance

4. Fine lines may appear more noticeable

5. Increased sensitivity to certain products

Skincare tips:

1. Choose gentle, moisturizing cleansers.

2. Use a rich moisturizer to help maintain the skin barrier.

3. Look for hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides.

4. Avoid very hot water and harsh scrubs.

5. Use sunscreen daily.

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin tends to react more easily to skincare products, weather changes, pollution, or other environmental factors. Sensitivity can occur alongside oily, dry, or combination skin.

Common characteristics:

1. Redness

2. Burning or stinging sensation

3. Itching or irritation

4. Dry or uncomfortable feeling

5. Reaction to certain skincare products

Skincare tips:

1. Choose gentle and fragrance-free products.

2. Avoid harsh scrubs and excessive exfoliation.

3. Introduce new products one at a time.

4. Patch-test new products when appropriate.

5. Keep your skincare routine simple and consistent.

Combination Skin

Combination skin has characteristics of more than one skin type. Usually, the forehead, nose, and chin (T-zone) are oily, while the cheeks may be normal or dry.

Common characteristics:

1. Oily T-zone

2. Dry or normal cheeks

3. Uneven texture

4. Visible pores around the nose

5. Occasional breakouts

Skincare tips:

1. Use a gentle cleanser suitable for your whole face.

2. Apply lightweight moisturizer to maintain hydration.

3. Use targeted products on particularly oily or dry areas.

4. Avoid using very heavy products across the entire face.

5.Protect your skin with sunscreen every day.
